On the other hand, whistle blowing by Michael will adversely affect the organization (Robinson, Robertson and Curtis 2012). Motivation behind whistle blowing There are various reasons of motivation for the employees to become whistle blowers. The following sections will discuss about the various motivational factors of whistle blowing. The integrity and justice that the employees hold is one of the key reasons to opt for whistle blowing. According to this type of employees, they cannot tolerate the injustice or wrong doing in the organization, which caused blowing. These sorts of employees expect their organization will have positive take on the business scenario, regardless of that they opt for disclosing the wrong doings of the organization. Money also acts as motivation for the whistle blowers. In some cases, the award money for disclosing the wrong doings and compensation from the organization as penalty also prompts several employees to blow the whistle (Ayagre and Aidoo-Buameh 2014). Justification of whistle blowing There is a limit or boundary of the justification of the whistle blowing. Employees disclosing the wrong doings of their organization due to the reason that they wants to prevent the unethical practices is justified. However, on the other hand, disclosing confidential information just for reward or compensation or from any personal grudge will be the breach of privacy and will not be justified (Ayagre and Aidoo-Buameh 2014). Moreover, disclosing any confidential information of government regarding the national security is also not justified. Maybe government will involve unethical practices to gather the information but still it is for alls good. Thus, whistle blowing in this case will not be justified. Relevancy of ethics in business Ethics is relevant in business due to the reason that, it will help the organization to retain their employees. Practicing of unethical practices will de-motivate the employees to work in the organization. In this case, due to the involvement of unethical practices, employees like Michael are thinking of leaving the organization. Ethics helps in generating positive word of mouth. Employees will refer more candidates to work for the organization if the ethical principles can be followed (Crane and Matten 2016). Thus, the organization will more talent pool for selection and enhanced employer branding. In this case, employees like Michael are de-motivated in doing their job. Thus, they will not refer anyone to this organization. It will degrade the employer branding. Following ethical principles helps in preventing lawsuits and other issues. In this case, the access to the confidential information will disclose at any time. Thus, it will attract several legal issues for the organization. In addition, the business potentiality and reputation will get affected (Rushe 2017). Ethics helps in building effective teamwork and working environment in the organization. Employees will have positive impression and satisfaction in doing their job in their workplace. In this case, due to the involvement of the unethical practices, employees like Michael are having low morale. They will not able to work effectively in this environment, which will impact the organizational productivity (Crane and Matten 2016). Ethics will also help the upper levelmanagement to communicate their vision to their employees effectively in the organization. This is due to the reason that, if the leadership roles can be played ethically, then the employees will be more motivated to follow their leaders due to the reason that they will have positive impression about the upper level management. Conclusion Thus, from the above discussion it can be concluded that, adhering to the ethical principles is one of the key measures for the business organizations to effectively operate in the market. The ethical issues identified in this case are the manner by which the confidential information is being gathered. Implications for this unethical practice have also been discussed. Eating Healthy Essays - Obesity, Dieting, Physical Exercise

Eating Healthy Staying healthy and eating right is a lifestyle that many people should consider. A juicy hamburger from McDonalds dripping with special sauce topped with cheese is not exactly considered a healthy meal. Our society today is busy and on the go at all times. It is so much easier to stop and get fast food and then continue on. However, we should stop and think; is it really worth it to not eat right and exercise? Studies have shown, people that eat right and exercise live longer. Eating fattening foods clogs your heart with cholesterol and fat. People that do not exercise and continue to eat unhealthy foods will slow their metabolism. This is why over 70% of our society are overweight today. My grandfather has had problems with his heart in the past mostly because he was very overweight and eating the wrong foods. The doctor advised him to exercise and eat right. Now, after two years of following this advice, his heart is stronger than ever. The doctor informed him that at least ten years has been added to his life. Exercising and eating right really does help you to live longer. Eating healthy foods and exercising also helps to build persons self-esteem. Many people who are overweight do not feel good about themselves. They want to be thinner but instead of doing it the right way, they try crash diets that seem to always fail or do nothing at all about their condition. If we would exercise at least 45 minutes per day, 3 to 4 times per week, it is guaranteed that we lose weight and get in shape. When a person is at the size and stature that they would like to be then their self-esteem rises. If one has a good attitude and think they look great then more than likely other people will also. When one exercises and eats good foods then they also physically feel great. The fact that one has just spent an hour on the treadmill and a salad was for dinner makes a person feel as if they are really accomplishing something. If people would realize what a great feeling a person gets from working out and eating healthy foods then everyone would be doing it. It is a lifestyle that people should adopt and live by. It should also make one feel good that they are doing something to better themselves. All of us have areas that we can improve on. By improving our physical imperfections it makes us feel great. Some people were raised to eat everything on their plate whether it was healthy or not. If your mom made the food, then it was eaten. What our generation should do is learn from our parents' mistakes. We should start cooking our children healthier foods so that they will grow up knowing and living healthier lifestyles. Others say that there is just not enough time to exercise or that fat free foods don't taste as good as fattening foods. However, we should make the time to exercise so that we can improve our mental and physical state. Also, there are now even fat free potato chips on the market that taste exactly the same as regular potato chips. Some people say that problems make them eat more, but we should practice more self-control during times that we are having problems. There are also the people that say they are not able to exercise because of physical problems, however, they are still able to eat healthy foods. In fact, people that do suffer from physical ailments and are not able to exercise should be that much more interested in learning to eat healthy. These excuses for choosing to live unhealthy in my opinion are just that; excuses! It is now time to make our choice. A healthy lifestyle and learning to exercise will benefit each one of us. Will we continue to live as unhealthy blobs, or will we take a little time out of our busy schedules so that we can live longer, raise our self-esteem, and feel great?

Expectancy Theory of Motivation Introduction When we talk about motivation, we can see motivation as the strength arising from the mind / mental effort that dictates how an individual will behaviour in an organization or work place, how much effort this individual has on his/her tasks and how this person continues firmly on his /her tasks whenever hurdles face him/her. To managers, their interest is to ensure implementation of strategies and thus they have the obligation to motivate their workers because loosing an employee can be very costly. In addition, managers need to motivate workers so that they can retain the valuable ones as well recruit the best to join the organization as this translates to success in implementing strategies. Through intrinsic reward (self-satisfaction on completing a task) and extrinsic reward (being recognized by others for good work done), employees are able to perform as managers expect, thus managers have to ensure they motivate their employees. As there are several motivation theories, only thr ough comparing and contrasting one can establish which ones motivate workers more than others. Maslows pyramid or hierarchy of needs theory of motivation has greater motivation to employees than Vrooms expectancy theory. Comparing First, Maslows hierarchy theory as an earlier proposition, it creates the base on which Vrooms expectancy theory, a later edition, builds on. Secondly, both the Expectancy and the Maslows hierarchy of needs motivational theories, they both enable a person to modify his/her input (efforts to undertake a task) depending on the importance they have on the expected result in the entire procedure of undertaking that task and what they understand about input and output. For example, Maslow theory of motivation as a commonly known theory, it addresses needs of an individual in a hierarchy manner. It considers a single need and this need depends on already other satisfied needs. From an arrangement of how these needs need to fulfilment in a hierarchy manner, one can establish those that require early fulfilment than others. In addition, both theories allows an individual to establish which results are most likely to motivate people and this will dictate the best measures to take as factors o f their experiences and expectations ( Droar 2006). Maslows understanding on the effect of unsatisfied needs relates to expectancy theory in that like Maslow, Vroom indicates in the expectancy theory that the need to fulfil unmet demands is what motivates individuals where such a person will make a concerned decision to undertake a certain task in a manner that he/she understands as satisfying that need. Therefore, high motivation will manifest where there is concise and quantified goals that for example in a team the team members understand how a task as achievable and how it would benefit them considerably. In cases of low motivation, team members usually become frustrated as they cannot define the best ways to undertake different tasks and for what rewards these tasks can bring to them (Yeatts and Hyten 1998, p. 64). In addition, whenever an individual understands that he/she is lacking an essential item/want necessary for wellbeing, then this understanding will establish a need for that individual to undertake activities or behave in a manner that will lead to satisfying that particular need. Moreover, if someone understands that certain need is being satisfied, then this person will lack motivation to manifest characters/behaviours that associate with fulfilling the need (Yeatts and Hyten, 1998, p. 63). Considering this perspective in a work place, what this indicates is that financial benefits will act as a significant motivation tool until an understanding that the money is a way of fulfilling different categories of demands (basic needs). Contrary to this, if these people understand that such demands are fulfilling, then these people/employees will lack motivation to fulfil such needs and will rather establish other ways of fulfilling higher ranked needs touching self-esteem. The more the ex pectations employees have on their job, the greater the motivation they will have to perform. These approaches are common both the Maslows hierarchy of needs and Vrooms expectancy theories of motivation. Contrasting As suggested by Victor Vroom and unlike Maslow theory, the expectancy theory of motivation does not focus on needs but concentrates in the results. When Maslows hierarchy of needs theory concentrates on the association of internal needs of an individual and the expected effort needed to satisfy them such as time and money, Vroom puts apart effort (a result of motivation), performance, and results/outcome. What this means is that for anyone to get motivated, the drive behind effort should associate with execution of relevant tasks and the outcome. To connect the drive/effort with performance, expectancy helps one to believe that extra dedication on a task will improve performance, meaning hard work pays. For the hard work to be fruitful there has to be right resources (adequate time, appropriate skills, and support). Linking performance and outcome will be instrumentality that helps one perceive that whenever an individual performs excellently, then a worthy outcome is viable and fina lly valence connects outcome and effort as dictated by the main motivation. For example, if cash motivates someone, then taking leave would not be valuable to this person because he is not making money. In Maslows theory of motivation, individuals get motivation from something extra as compared to only cash/financial benefits and job fulfilment. Therefore, the broad consideration of varying factors improves motivation of individuals/employees. Expectancy theory on its part only illustrates motivation as not applying to all cases as the understanding of whatever one wants to achieve/objects relates to efforts on a task and performance of that task, performance and compensation/gain, gain and objective fulfilment. As these will differ for different individuals as well as locations, to design rewarding systems, managers should thus always consider respective organizational structure so that the rewards offered relate to individual goals in such environments (Gunkel 2006, p. 15). Expectancy Theory of motivation proves to be most sophisticated comparing to Maslows theory in motivating employees because the effort to undertake a task will relate to the surrounding and capability to dictate the resulting achievement/performance of a person (Griffin and Moorhead 2009, p. 99). This theory to significant number of people and situations, might fail to apply. For example, it is more difficult to change management practices of an organization to meet individual needs, which might appear as outdated ways of doing things to many people and thus expectancy theory viewed as an individualized theory rather than management oriented (Hassard and Parker 1993, p. 93). Contrary to the expectancy theory, Maslows hierarchy of needs theory has the option that working towards self-actualization, rather than actually achieving it may be the ultimate motivation for most people (Griffin and Moorhead 2009, p. 88). As currently, some people find themselves leaving high paying jobs that fail to satisfy their job objectives to low paying jobs that satisfy. Maslows gives a sense of understanding without conscious reasoning thus common to many practicing managers and gives a general structure to classify demands as needs will not necessary fit to Maslows model. In the manner in which the needs rank, the bottom needs will be termed as physiological needs (food and water) and they determine when the following batch of growth needs (knowing and perceiving ones needs) will start fulfilment. It is only when the growth needs are fulfilled that one is at peace to attain his/her potential such as self-actualization (example) after which one can overcome his/her self-es teem (example) to assist others (Droar 2006). This is a more realist arrangement that enables one to progressive exploit his/her potential through satisfaction from preceding level of needs unlike expectancy theory that limits only on reward and job satisfaction. The expectation theory to managers will base their reward on individual achievement as to how better that individual relates input and output paying attention of any possible changes in the process to reduce risk. Furthermore, managers are required to utilize organizational structure that hold rewards and performance together as well as ensuring rewards are worthy to employees, and should involve in training to improve employees ability and understanding that extra effort yields good performance. This can be challenging as the process might turn out to be complex for some mangers. However, Maslows hierarchy of needs theory will give the flexibility for managers to allow development up the ranks of their employees in the best way they feel satisfied increasing motivation. In addition, Maslows theory allows managers to understand the significant needs active for specific employee ensuring motivation. Conclusion In summary, Maslows hierarchy of needs theory has greater motivation to employees compared to the expectancy theory. Although they compare in some aspects, the significantly differ in others. These two theories compare in Maslow theory creating a base from which expectancy theory develops from, both enabling a person to modify his/her input depending on the importance they have on the expected result after performing a task, as well as allowing an individual to establish which results are most likely to motivate them or others. Contrary to the similarities, expectancy theory concentrates on the needs rather than the results on a particular task where else Maslows theory focuses on how the different needs associate with themselves and what it calls fro to satisfy them and allows managers to understand the significant needs active for specific employee ensuring motivation. Expectancy theory separates effort, performance, and achievement of a certain task making it difficult and sophist icated for many individuals to explore their potentials because the effort to undertake a task will relate to the surrounding and capability to dictate the resulting achievement/performance of a person. Native American Woman: Zitkala-Sa

Vanessa Melton-Wampler SOCI3093. 50 March 18, 2013 Professor Thomas Native American Woman: Zitkala-Sa The month of March is Women’s History Month and one of my favorite months of the year. This month has the opportunity to entice people learn about women from all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds, and encourage women to admire those who’ve made a difference. There are many Native American women who’ve fought and died for the rights of their tribe and sex, but she is by far one of my favorite ones.Through literature, music, and politics, she fought to change the thoughts and beliefs of White America so their views of Native American culture could be better ones. Name of Important Woman I chose to write about one of my favorite Native American authors and activists, Gertrude Simmons Bonnin. Zitkala Sa, which means Red Bird in the Lakota dialect, is a name she gave herself after she left the tribe and graduated from college (Giese 1996) so she is known by both nam es.She was born February 22, 1876 at the Yankton Sioux Reservation (Johnson and Wilson 1988:27) and she â€Å"died at 61 and was buried in Arlington Cemetery (due to her husband's service in World War I)† in 1938 (Hoefel 1999). Racial/Ethnic Background Gertrude Simmons Bonnin is considered a part of the Yankton Sioux Tribe. She was the mixed child of John Haysting Simmons, a man of Anglo-French decent (Johnson and Wilson 1988:27) and full blooded Yankton Sioux Indian Ellen Tate ‘I yohiwin â€Å"She Reaches for the Wind† Simmons (Henderson 1997). She dentified more with her Native American roots because of the traditional teachings her mother taught her. Her mother taught her the ways and language of the Yankton Sioux and even raised her in â€Å"a tipi on the Missouri River until she was 12† (Hoefel 1999). Justification Gertrude Simmons Bonnin/Zitkala-Sa is such an important woman because of her positive contributions to the Native American community. Bonn in not only was â€Å"one of the leading figures in the Pan-Indian movement† she â€Å"dedicated her life to improving the social and educational awareness of American Indians† (Johnson and Wilson 1988:27).She used her writing skills to fight for new legislation that favored Native Americans. Her involvement as editor of the American Indian Magazine, a quarterly magazine for the Indian Rights Association (SAI) helped to keep her people informed of any new legislation (Johnson and Wilson 1988:30). Life History It was at this age when Ellen Tate ‘Iyohiwin Simmons decided to send her daughter to the same boarding school she attended so Bonnin would have the â€Å"ability to fend for herself later in life among an increasing number of palefaces† (Hoefel 1999).The boarding school Gertrude Bonnin attended was run by Quaker Missionaries in Wabash, Indiana. The White’s Manual Labor Institute became Bonnin’s home for four years until she returned to t he reservation in South Dakota. Against her mother’s wishes, she decided to seek higher education by attending another school even further from home called the Santee Normal Training School in Nebraska. After graduating from that school, Bonnin went on to get several scholarships, degrees, and accolades from Earlham College in Indiana and Boston Conservatory of Music.After college, she retained a teaching job at the Carlisle Indian School. This school was founded by Richard Henry Pratt, an army officer with the mottoes â€Å"’From savagery to civilization’ and ‘We must kill the savage to save the man’† (Giese 1996). In addition to his mottoes, â€Å"Pratt abusively exploited the students for labor while at the same time receiving government funds for each student attending the school† (Henderson 1997). During the two years she taught at the school, she wrote about the punishments done to the students who didn’t conform.This is w hen she became known as Zitkala-Sa; writer and activist. She was criticized â€Å"because many felt she showed no gratitude for the kindness and support that the white people had given her in her education† (ibid. ). She married Captain Raymond Bonnin, who was a mixed Native American just like she was. Together they had a son and lived on the Ute Reservation in Utah for fourteen years. It was there she actively got involved in the movement for changes within the Native American community.Through her efforts, Bonnin gained an ally named Montezuma who â€Å"echoed [Bonnin’s] anti-BIA sentiments† and supported her fight to grant the Indians full citizenship rights so they could determine their own fate (Johnson and Wilson 1988:34). Contributions During her lifetime, Bonnin accomplished a lot in the name of her Native American heritage. In 1916, the Bonnin’s moved to Washington DC where she acted as secretary and editor of the American Indian Magazine. She fo ught to ban the use of peyote amongst her people.She â€Å"aired such controversial issues as enfranchisement, Indian military service in World War I, corruption in the BIA, and allotment of tribal lands† (Hoefel 1999). She has expressed her voice and political opinions through her various different writings: Oklahoma's Poor Rich Indians: An Orgy of Graft, Exploitation of the Five Civilized Tribes, Legalized Robbery (1924), American Indian Stories (1921), â€Å"Why I Am a Pagan† (1902), The School Days of an Indian Girl, and An Indian Teacher Among Indians.In addition to her numerous publishing’s about Native American life and her autobiographies, she also was a leader amongst her people. She and her husband founded the National Council of American Indians in 1926. Legacies She was the first and only president of the NCAI, where she â€Å"was the sole support of the organization, through speaking engagements to women’s groups† (Giese 1996) and whil e she was alive, its membership was made up of only Native Americans. Through her struggles and efforts, she helped â€Å"American Indians gained full citizenship in 1924,† (Johnson and Wilson 1988:38).She â€Å"fought for government reform, law codification, Bureau of Indian Affairs’ employment of Indians, Court of Claims’ redress of land settlements, and the preservation of the actual history of her people† as well as â€Å"assimilation, citizenship, and abolishing the BIA† (Hoefel 1999). I. Attention Step-Introduction A. California estimates $25 billion a year is spent on illegal aliens. California’s â€Å"budget shortfall† is about $25 billion. B. Illegal aliens create a negative financial drain on society and are responsible for increased crime in that state making the country unsafe because of the criminal acts and they are also taking millions of jobs from Americans. C. llegal immigration is an enormous problem for the United States, and one that is growing, with nine to eleven million illegal aliens currently estimated to be in the U.S. II. Need Step-Develop the problem According to heritage.org â€Å"Illegal immigration into the United States is massive in scale. More than 10 million undocumented aliens currently reside in the U.S., and that population is growing by 700,000 per year†. One of the largest problems that illegal immigration causes is the loss of job and it not just along the border. Another issue that illegal immigration caused is that they generally do not pay taxes and still take advantages and many benefits that the United States offers. II. Satisfaction Step-Provide a general solution. Incentives for illegal immigration must be eliminated. The penalties for violating immigration law must be increased. Existing programs that are particularly effective must be expanded. The loopholes that facilitate illegal immigration must be closed. A greater investment must be made in the personnel who combat illegal immigration. III. Visualization Step-Describe the advantages of adopting the solution The cost of educating children of undocumented immigrants is staggering. Even though they are receiving free education, Americans still have to 12 billing dollars per year. Imagine if this money was set aside to pay for education for Americans or documented immigrants. According to the Drug policy alliance, â€Å"The drug war is responsible for hundreds of billions of wasted  tax dollars and misallocated government spending. Organized crime, gangs and drug cartels have the most to gain financially from prohibition, and these profits can easily be funneled into arms smuggling, violence and corruption.† IV. Action Step-Tell us precisely what you want us to do. Continue to strengthen border security. Stop giving amnesty to undocumented immigrant Improve the ratio between deportation and illegal immigration. The penalties for violating immigration law must be increased V. Conclusion In conclusion, illegal immigrants are causing huge problems in the US. They are costing the taxpayers billions of dollars on a yearly basis. Making the country unsafe because of the criminal acts and they are also taking millions of jobs from Americans. Again, we can reduce this problem by implementing simple but effective solutions such as improving our border fences, not granting amnesty, and intensifying the penalties and deportation laws.
